The Junior Nature Guide Certification is a youth leadership pathway designed to nurture the next generation of environmental stewards. Through hands-on fieldwork, natural science study, and mentorship, participants grow from curious learners into confident guides capable of leading younger children, supporting community programs, and caring deeply for their local ecosystems.
This program provides the training, skills, and character-building experiences youth need to become grounded leaders—whether in nature clubs, schools, mosques, community centers, or their own families.

PROGRAM GOALS

The Junior Nature Guide program is thoughtfully designed for young women ages 14+ and as young leaders they will:

• Understand local ecology and natural systems
• Demonstrate field safety, observation skills, and responsible outdoor behavior
• Lead and assist in nature walks, activities, and lessons
• Model stewardship, compassion, responsibility, and teamwork
• Support community programs and younger learners
• Create and implement meaningful service projects through The Khalifa Project

The certification prepares youth for leadership roles within LSNC programs—and beyond.

CORE COMPONENTS

The Junior Nature Guide pathway is built around four key pillars.

1. LEADERSHIP FORMATION

Youth receive structured training in:

• Communication and public speaking
  
• Group management and guiding techniques
  
• Risk awareness and outdoor safety
  
• Problem-solving and decision-making
  
• Building confidence through real-world experience
  

Training sessions include practice leading nature circles, reading the landscape, and assisting adult instructors during real programs.

2. MENTORSHIP & COMMUNITY

Every Junior Guide is paired with supportive mentors—experienced guides and instructors who offer:

• Regular check-ins
  
• Skill modeling
  
• Opportunities to shadow and assist
  
• Encouragement and reflection practices
  

This mentorship model strengthens character, accountability, and a sense of belonging to a community of young leaders.

3. SKILLS & FIELD COMPETENCIES

Y​outh work toward earning a series of Skills Badges, each representing a key competency in outdoor leadership. Badges may include:

• Naturalist Skills
• Land Acknowledgement 
• Wildlife Tracking
• Map Reading & Navigation
• Outdoor Safety & First Aid
• Plant Identification
• Weather & Observation
• Leave No Trace Stewardship
• Teaching & Guiding Basics

Badges can be earned through workshops, field lessons, independent study, and supervised practice.

​4. THE KHALIFA PROJECT

At the center of the certification is The Khalifa Project, a guided service requirement that empowers youth to give back to community and land.

Examples include:

• Restoring habitats in local preserves
• Leading nature walks for younger children
• Creating educational materials or field guides
• Organizing clean-ups or pollinator garden installations
• Supporting school or masajid outdoor learning initiatives

Through service, youth practice responsibility, humility, and care—transforming learning into action.

THE KHALIFA PROJECT (CAPSTONE)

The Khalifa Project is the final step of the Junior Nature Guide Certification journey.
Each participant designs and completes a youth-led, environmentally meaningful project that serves their community.

THE PROCESS INCLUDES

• Identifying a need or opportunity
• Creating a clear project plan
• Seeking feedback from mentors
• Leading the project with peers or younger students
• Reflecting on impact and lessons learned

The capstone demonstrates readiness to serve as a certified Junior Nature Guide and contributes something lasting to the local environment.

ELIGIBILITY & COMMITMENT

This program is ideal for young women who:

• Are ages 14+ 
• Enjoy being outdoors and learning about nature
• Are ready to grow as leaders and role models
• Can commit to regular participation in field sessions, trainings, and service
• Are willing to complete all Skills Badges and The Khalifa Project

Time commitment varies by cohort but typically includes:

• Monthly workshops or field lessons
• Volunteer/mentorship hours
• Completion of capstone project

No prior experience is required—only interest, curiosity, and a positive attitude.
